Slatina: Mineral Water, History and Cycling Routes

Slatina lies at the foot of the western foothills of the Krupinská planina in the Štiavnica Valley.

Nature

The area around Slatina lies within the first-, second- and third-degree protection zones for natural mineral table waters. Travertine hills in Slatina are part of the emergence area of Slatina-type mineral water. In 1802, Dr. Pavol Kitaibel studied the physical, chemical and medicinal properties of Slatina’s mineral water and determined a stable temperature of 14.4 °C.

Culture

The oldest surviving written mention of Slatina dates from 1245; the settlement is referred to as “villa Zalatna” in the document. The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk is the most significant sacred monument in Slatina and dates from 1650. The annual cultural calendar includes two recurring events: the Hody cultural event takes place in Slatina every May, followed by an Advent concert every December.

Transport

Slatina lies on Road I/75, which connects the village directly with Veľký Krtíš, 44 km away, and Lučenec, 88 km away. European route E77 runs approximately 2 km west of Slatina and connects the area with a Hungarian border crossing 14 km away.

Cycling

The Šahanská trasa leads from Dudince through vineyards to Slatina and onward to Šahy. Hrušovský okruh 2594 is a moderately difficult, blue-marked circular cycling route with a total length of 75 km. Hrušovský okruh 2594 passes through Sečianky, Kleňany and Ipeľské Úľany to Slatina, where it reaches a mineral water spring. A mineral water spring lies 500 m south of Slatina; access at the bottling facility is considered good.
