Devičany: Churches, Manor House and Hiking Route
Devičany combines architectural history, a varied landscape and a hiking route through the village. The specific points of reference range from individual buildings and the different parts of the municipality to destinations in the surrounding region. These different scales give the village a clearly structured profile.
Culture
Devičany is home to a Protestant church, a Baroque-Neoclassical building dating from 1776. Its tower was added in 1856. The church is surrounded by a wall into which a stone Baroque-Neoclassical epitaph has been set. The architectural form, date, later tower and epitaph thus form an ensemble whose individual features are clearly identified.
The new school building in Devičany was constructed from 1914 to 1917, now serves religious purposes and houses a memorial room. In the northeastern part of Devičany there is also the Neoclassical manor house, built around 1810. The village thus contains buildings from different periods and with different uses, each associated with a specific building.
Landscape
The municipality of Devičany is assigned to different landscape regions according to the cardinal directions. The northwestern and northern parts of the municipality belong to the Štiavnické vrchy. The southeastern and southern parts belong to the Ipeľská pahorkatina, which is part of the Podunajská nížina. These two classifications make the landscape structure within the municipality precisely visible.
The Ostrý Vrch and Varta mountains are located in the immediate surroundings of Devičany. The Priesil and Veľký Veterník mountains are also located in the surroundings of Devičany. The four named mountains add to the landscape references around the municipality, without their different spatial classifications coinciding.
Hiking
Hiking route 5534 passes through Devičany over a distance of 5.3 kilometers. The KST manages this route between Devičany and Tekovská Breznica. Thus, both the specific length and the stated route between the two villages are firmly associated with this hiking route.
Surrounding Region
The Svätý Urban Church is located in the vicinity of Devičany. In the wider regional surroundings of Devičany are the Hrušov ruins and the Kúlyika Church. These destinations extend the view beyond the buildings in the village to different cultural monuments in the respective named regional areas.
Historically, wine from Prandorf was brought to the imperial court in Vienna under the name “Liečivé víno z prandorfských Plieškov.” The name refers to Prandorf and preserves the wine’s historical connection with the Viennese court.
