Veľké Kozmálovce – Culture, Plain and Reservoir

Veľké Kozmálovce combines a clearly recognisable landscape with noteworthy evidence of local life. The municipality lies on the left bank of the Hron River. At the same time, the entire municipality, including its administrative territory, lies on a plain. Riverbanks and flat terrain therefore shape the character of the place equally.

Nature

The reservoir of the Veľké Kozmálovce water structure is 2 km long and 300 m wide. The surroundings of this reservoir have been used for recreational purposes for several years and also offer opportunities for anglers. The Veľké Kozmálovce water structure area is also used by athletes and sport anglers. Water, the shoreline and the flat surroundings are thus closely connected with various forms of leisure activities.

In Veľké Kozmálovce, the Hájik recreational zone is located along the Pohronská cyklomagistrála cycle route. The recreational zone provided there is also intended to serve cyclists, tourists and visitors.

Culture

One of the most prominent buildings is All Saints’ Church. It was rebuilt from the ground up and enlarged in the Baroque style in 1752. Inside, there is a life-size wall painting of Jesus and his disciples from 1981. A cross shines on the church tower and is visible up to 5 km away.

In the centre of Veľké Kozmálovce stands a statue of the Holy Trinity. It dates from 1937 and was commissioned by locals who sought work in America. Another testimony to the history of the village is located in the southern part of the village, Dolný koniec: this is where the oldest cross in Veľké Kozmálovce stands, erected in 1854. All three crosses in the built-up area of Veľké Kozmálovce were reconstructed in 2008.

The reconstructed war memorial lists those who fell in both world wars. It also commemorates seven unknown Soviet soldiers who died in the winter of 1944/1945 during the passage of the front through the municipality’s territory. The kozmálovský folk costume, preserved by the inhabitants for a long time, is also part of the local culture. The customs of Veľké Kozmálovce were revived at christenings, engagements, weddings and carnival celebrations.

Community Life

In the centre, there is a public space for recreation and leisure activities, as well as for municipal, social and cultural events. The central recreational area of Veľké Kozmálovce includes a covered stage, a gazebo, an entrance arch, a playground and a covered market hall with a sales counter. Historical memorial sites and spaces for present-day community life thus stand side by side within the village.
