Bielovce: Churches, Manor Houses and the Landscape along the Ipeľ
Bielovce lies in the Ipeľská pahorkatina hilly region, as well as in the floodplain and on the terraces of the Ipeľ. In Bielovce, the Ipeľ border river offers opportunities for fishing and relaxation. This brings together a distinctive river landscape and a village with numerous religious and historic buildings.
Culture and History
One of the prominent buildings in Bielovce is the Neo-Gothic manor house of the Csécsi-Csillag family, with two towers, which was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The Neoclassical manor house of the Bossányi family also dates from the 19th century. Another historic complex is the distillery of the Szeszler family, dating from 1912. These buildings represent different functions and periods of construction that can be traced side by side in the village.
The Roman Catholic Church of St Martin in Bielovce dates from 1714. It is a single-nave building with a rectangular-ended presbytery and an integrated tower. The Reformed Church in Bielovce dates from 1781 and was remodelled in 1913; its furnishings date from the time when the church was built. Beside the church, in an enclosed garden, stands a stone cross erected in 1946.
Religious Sites and Monuments
Historical reminders can also be found elsewhere in the village. Bielovce Cemetery contains a cross with a cast-iron corpus dating from 1865. The tomb monument of the Simonyi family dates from the 19th century. The monument to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars was erected in 1994. Together with the two churches and the stone cross, these monuments form a succession of different memorials and symbols of faith.
The Surrounding Landscape
Several mountains lie around Bielovce: Holló-kő, Vár-bükk, Lóhegy and Hegyes Orom. Their names complement the geographical description of the village, which is also shaped by the Ipeľská pahorkatina hilly region and the floodplain and terraces of the Ipeľ.
Cultural Attractions in the Surrounding Region
The Kismarosi Sváb Muzeális Gyűjtemény, a museum, is located in the wider region surrounding Bielovce. Kúlyika, a church, is also situated nearby. Castles in the wider surrounding region include Csúzy-kastély and Füri Zichy-kastély.
Other religious sites can be found in Ipolybél. The Roman Catholic Church dedicated to St Martin was built there in 1714 and acquired its present form in 1884. A statue of John Calvin stands in the courtyard of the Reformed Church in Ipolybél.
