Svätý Peter: Viticulture and Church History

Svätý Peter combines church and manorial history with viticulture. The first written mention of the town dates from 1332 and is associated with the consecration of a parish and a church dedicated to Saint Peter. To this day, churches, historic buildings, a family crypt, and numerous wine cellars reveal different sides of the town.

Landscape

The municipality of Svätý Peter includes floodplain and inundation soils as well as sandy loess terraces and hilly landscapes with extensive sand dunes. The area also includes arable land, vineyards, and acacia forests. The southern part of the municipality consists primarily of fertile fields. Thus, different soil and landscape types lie side by side within the municipality: wet areas in the floodplains, sandy terraces and dunes, as well as agriculturally used fields and wooded areas.

Wine

Vineyards have been documented in Svätý Peter since 1715. Svätopeterský rizling is considered the best-known varietal wine from the vineyards in the municipality. Wine cellars and press houses were built at two locations: in the “Nové Vinohrady” area along the cellar road towards Komárno and in the “Strážny Vrch” area along the cellar road towards Madar.

More than 200 wine cellars are still actively used in Svätý Peter today. At St Peter Vini, wine tastings take place in the large dome of the wine cellar. St Peter Vini offers wines from its own production, which are stored in barrels in its own wine cellar; the cellar can be visited. A specific date of a recent wine event has also been recorded: the XIII International Welschriesling Wine Festival took place on April 5, 2025, at the Cultural Centre of Svätý Peter.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1730 on the site of a Gothic church. The severe earthquake of 1763 badly damaged the Catholic church. Count Miklós Zichy subsequently arranged for its restoration and commissioned decorative windows, which are still visible today.

The religious architectural history of Svätý Peter also includes two Protestant churches. The Reformed Protestant Church in Svätý Peter is Neoclassical and was built as a Toleration Church in 1784. A Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession was built in Svätý Peter in 1956.

History

The Zichy family manor house served as the county house during military unrest, hosting county assemblies. During the Revolution of 1848–1849, the Zichy manor house accommodated György Klapka and János Damjanich; afterwards, the building served as a military hospital. The Zichy manor house is currently in inadequate technical condition.

Smaller historical reminders also form part of the townscape. A plane tree planted in the park when a daughter of the Zichy family was born is now protected as a natural monument. The family crypt in Svätý Peter contains the remains of Countess Fábryová, her husband, and their six-year-old son.
