Veľké Kosihy: Hotels, Dunajské luhy and Local History

The Dunajské luhy Natura 2000 site encompasses the main course of the Danube, the floodplain forests on its left bank, and also the cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy. In the cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy, at the Mostové site, there are salt-marsh and salt-meadow communities of European importance, which are among the most endangered habitats. These salt-meadow communities near Mostové provide a habitat for many endangered plant and animal species. The natural aquatic habitats of the Dunajské luhy area, including rivers and swamps, provide suitable conditions for waterbirds to breed, such as the little bittern, common tern, garganey and redshank.

Culture

The old pumping station is part of the technical history of Veľké Kosihy. It was built into the Danube embankment in 1856 and formed part of the Žitný ostrov drainage system. The small single-storey building of the steam pumping station has been out of operation since 1965. The village landscape also features a Neoclassical manor house, which Károly Zámory had built around 1830 next to the Calvinist church. The Calvinist church itself was built in the Neoclassical style in 1819. Its interior features wooden Protestant galleries on two sides. The church is considered well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Paths and Sport

More recent municipal measures have also shaped individual parts of the village. As part of a modernisation project, the old bus stop in the centre of Veľké Kosihy was replaced. A municipal project provided for the construction of a total of 264 m of footpaths, as well as a 6.5 m-long pedestrian bridge over the Lél–Kosihy canal. On 16 October 2021, a multifunctional outdoor sports area covering 100 m² was ceremonially opened in Veľké Kosihy as part of the Day of Sport and Health. The sports park handed over at that time, “Jungle street workout”, included, among other things, an inclined bench, vertical and horizontal ladders, a low horizontal bar, low parallel bars, inclined parallel bars and a two-part high horizontal bar.
