Komárno combines a rich fortress history with distinctive squares, museums, thermal waters and landscapes along the Váh. The Pevnosť Komárno is particularly prominent: it is part of the most extensive fortress system in Central Europe, which extends across the Slovak Republic and Hungary. The oldest section, known as Stará pevnosť, was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. There is an important practical requirement for visits: for safety reasons, Pevnosť Komárno can only be visited as part of a guided tour with a guide.

Culture

Several places within the city also bring together different historical and architectural layers. Nádvorie Európy presents characteristic features of architecture from 36 European countries and regions in one location. The Podunajské múzeum has exhibitions and displays in three buildings in the centre of Komárno. The museum also includes a lapidarium of Roman stone monuments in Bastion No. 6 of the fortress system on the outskirts of Komárno.

The statue of György Klapka dominates the townscape of Námestie generála Klapku. Klapka was a representative of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/49. Another historic landmark is the Marian Column of the Holy Trinity, also called Súsošie Najsvätejšej Trojice or Trojičný stĺp. It dates from 1715 and commemorates the plague epidemic of 1710 to 1711 as well as the end of the Kuruc wars. Construction of Kostol sv. Ondreja lasted from 1723 to 1763.

Water and Nature

In summer, Termálne kúpalisko Komárno offers a 2.5-hectare area with seven different pools. This includes a Finnish sauna with a capacity of up to 20 people. The thermal baths also have a year-round outdoor pool. Its movable roof can be partially opened or closed.

There are also activities around the Mŕtve rameno Váhu by the water. Designated picnic areas are available there. Cycling, inline skating and running routes run around the Mŕtve rameno Váhu and the Váh. The Mŕtve rameno Váhu, located on the Váh, also offers opportunities for relaxation in nature. The EuroVelo 6 cycle route runs along Pevnosť Komárno.

For a trip to Komárno, hotels and other accommodation can be compared according to personal priorities: the focus may be on the fortress and the town's history, the thermal baths or the landscape along the Váh. This approach keeps the choice open and combines the different sides of the destination without anticipating a particular accommodation option.
