Culture and history

The so-called Old Fortress in Komárno was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. Číčovské mŕtve rameno is part of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area, with a total area of 12,284.5 ha; this forms an essential part of the Dunajské luhy Ramsar Site, with a total area of 14,488 ha.

Číčovské mŕtve rameno is home to rare aquatic and wetland communities and has been designated a habitat of international importance for waterbirds. Ostrovné lúky is an important breeding and survival habitat for the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus).

Thermal baths

The thermal bath in Komárno draws thermal water from a 1,060-metre-deep borehole, from which water emerges at a temperature of 45.2 °C and is channelled into indoor and selected outdoor pools. The outdoor area of the thermal bath in Komárno offers visitors up to seven different facilities.

Thermál Nesvady thermal bath is open all year round and uses geothermal water that emerges from a depth of 1,504 metres at a temperature of 62 °C. Thermál Nesvady thermal bath has a seasonal children’s pool for children up to six years old.

The thermal water in Patince is attributed with positive effects on the musculoskeletal system.

Visits and routes

The Hurbanovo Observatory’s visitor offering includes an individual tour of the permanent exhibition of the M.-T.-Konkoly Museum. The Hurbanovo Observatory is open to the public during the day and in the evening, also offering observations of the night sky.

The ship mill in Kolárovo received visitors daily from 10:00 to 17:00; guided tours took place every 15 minutes. Visitors to the Roman and Ethnographic Museum Kelemantia in Iža can also be received outside regular opening hours by prior arrangement.

The Bratislava–Štúrovo section of EuroVelo 6 is an easy 168 km road route along the Danube and passes through Komárno.
