Culture and History

The Calvary in Diakovce was erected in 1822 next to the Catholic church. The late Romanesque Benedictine church Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie in Diakovce was consecrated in 1228. Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie is a three-nave building with three eastern apses arranged in a row and two western towers.

The new Calvary in Diakovce was built under parish priest Samu Varghu using foundation funds and was consecrated on 7 November 1909. The Calvary stands on a small artificial hill near the Romanesque, originally Benedictine monastery church Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie in Diakovce and forms a prominent landmark.

The two Calvaries in Diakovce belong to different construction phases: next to the Catholic church stands the Calvary dating from 1822, while the new Calvary is associated with parish priest Samu Varghu, foundation funds and its consecration in 1909. The church complements this history through its late Romanesque, originally Benedictine character and its distinctive architectural form.
