Šaľa: Renaissance history, cycle paths and hotels

Šaľa is located in the northern part of the Danubian Lowland. The town’s architectural heritage includes the Renaissance Manor in Šaľa, which was originally a water castle probably built on older foundations in the 16th century. The building is a faithful copy of the palace of the Turzo family in Veľká Bytča.

Culture and history

The Roľnícky dom was built in 1730 and is a protected cultural monument. The building has wattle-and-daub walls made of woven willow branches and a thatched roof. The Church of St Margaret of Antioch has a different architectural character: the Neoclassical building was constructed between 1828 and 1837 on the site of an older church that had been built by the 16th century at the latest. The church has a single nave, a rectangular-ended presbytery and a vaulted dome space. The Holy Trinity sculpture group, erected in 1895, is a prominent landmark on Šaľa’s square.

Exhibitions and town life

Since 2009, the Dom ľudového bývania in Šaľa has housed an exhibition open year-round. The exhibition “Zo súčasnosti do minulosti” at CVČ Šaľa explores the history of the town of Šaľa and its immediate surroundings: its scope ranges from more recent events to the earliest traces of human life in the area.

Other institutions and events also preserve links to local life. The Mestská knižnica Jána Johanidesa is a public library with a general collection of media and is also open to visitors to the town of Šaľa. The Jánske ohne event in Šaľa commemorated an old custom specific to the Šaľa area. Víno Terra Wag 2026 was the 11th edition of a wine presentation and exhibition.

Cycle paths and water

The Vážska cycle route from Horné Zelenice to Šaľa is 36 kilometres long and ends in Šaľa. In Šaľa, it passes under the bridge over the Váh and then continues south along a paved embankment. The Šaľa–Diakovce cycle path is 1,565 metres long and begins in Šaľa on Diakovská Street.
