Culture and History

The Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Žihárec was built between 1728 and 1730. Construction was carried out by decision of Imre Esterházy. The Roman Catholic Church in Žihárec was later redesigned in the Classical style, and its tower was completed in 1833. In addition, the village has a Reformed Church, which is Classical in style and was built in 1784.

A monument in Žihárec commemorates the battle fought there on 16 June 1849. The monument to the Battle of Zsigárd was unveiled on 12 June 1999. Another established venue in the village is the Cultural, Social and Information Centre at Žihárec 85.

Landscape and Water

Žihárec is located near the Váh River and features a riverside landscape. The eastern part of the flat municipal area of Žihárec lies in the Váh floodplain. The western part of the municipal area of Žihárec lies on a terrace with numerous abandoned river channels. As a result, different types of landscape exist side by side within the municipality: a floodplain area in the east and a terrace shaped by former watercourses in the west.

The Rybníky Teheľňa I, II and III complex is located near Žihárec. It consists of three bodies of water separated by dams. The Rybníky Teheľňa I, II and III waters near Žihárec are designated as carp-fishing waters.

Events

Every year, Žihárec hosts community days commemorating the Battle of Zsigárd in 1849. The annual community days last for three days. The XXVIII Žihárecké dni also presented local culture, folk traditions and modern music to a broad audience. This event was a three-day international event.
