Lovce: Bison, Landscape and Slovak Culture

Protected nature, distinctive landscape features and Slovak culture can be found in Lovce. The Zubria zvernica bison reserve was established in 1958 as Slovakia’s only bison breeding facility. The breeding area covers 27 hectares, while the protected zone covers 113 hectares.

Nature and Landscape

The protected Zubria Obora area extends into the cadastral territory of Lovce. In the protected zone of Zubria zvernica, visitors can often observe not only bison and other wild animals, but also several protected animal and plant species. Lovce lies in the northern part of the Žitavská pahorkatina in the valley of the Bolkov stream and at the same time on the southern slopes of the Tribečské vrchy.

Zubria zvernica is located about 3 km beyond Lovce. There is a small car park in front of the entrance gate; from there, an approximately 300-metre-long, easy-to-walk path leads directly to the breeding facility. The Lazárova Spring in Vlčí kút can be reached via a turn-off from the road to Zubria zvernica and serves as a resting place for locals and visitors.

Viewpoints and Active Experiences

Built in 2015, Rozhľadňa Pliešky is a two-storey metal observation tower on the rocky ridge of the 440-metre-high quartzite hill Plieška above Lovce, between Lovce and Žikava, and has two viewing platforms.

Cyclists also have a clearly designated route connection. Cycle route 5118 continues from Zubria zvernica to Lovce and then on to Zlaté Moravce, where it ends in the town centre. The cadastral territory of Lovce also contains a carp fishing pond managed by MO SRZ Zlaté Moravce.

Culture and Customs

The Church of Christ the King in Lovce is part of the local architectural history. It was originally a Classicist building erected in 1780 and was expanded in the 20th century. The village also has three roadside chapels built by a local mason in the second half of the 19th century.

The Cerianka folklore group was founded on 18 January 2011 and presents Slovak folklore at performances at home and abroad through customs, traditional costumes and songs. Lovce Municipal Day has its own place in the village’s annual calendar: the Lovecká vareška goulash-cooking competition takes place there every year.
