Volkovce – Hotels and Cultural Heritage in the Hilly Region

The oldest surviving structure in Volkovce is the Church of Saint James the Elder. Its presbytery dates from the 14th century; the church was originally built in the Gothic style before Baroque elements were added between 1750 and 1754. The church thus provides a cultural gateway to Volkovce, while other features of the village are found in theatre, folklore and hiking. A view of the village therefore begins with a specific building and continues into the landscape, community life and performing arts.

Landscape

Volkovce lies in the hilly region of the Danubian Lowland, represented here by the Hronské pahorkatina, on the southern slopes of the Pohronský Inovec in the valley of the Bočovka stream. A 0.477-kilometre section of Road I/65 runs between Volkovce-Olichov-západ and Volkovce-Olichov-východ. The village location and the road section are therefore defined through several precisely named geographical references.

Culture

Volkovce’s cultural heritage extends beyond its church to the performing arts. Amateur dramatics in Volkovce date back to 1927. Two amateur theatre performances in Volkovce were performed exclusively by children. After a 16-year break, rehearsals for a play began again in Volkovce. It was performed at the church fair in 2000 to mark the celebration of the 725th anniversary of the municipality’s first written mention.

The repertoire of the Volkovčanka folklore group consisted mainly of local folk songs, as well as songs from the wider surrounding area. Performances by the Volkovčanka folklore group also included short scenes, such as demonstrations of traditional crafts and ancestral customs. Historically, a church fair with a gathering of former residents was held in Volkovce on the feast day of Saint James, the patron saint of the church.

Hiking

The Turisticko Rekreačný Klub Volkoviec a Závady organises hiking events for members and non-members. Alongside the cultural attractions, the village therefore also offers a specifically organised hiking connection.
