Šišov: Church, Hillfort, Manor House and Park

Šišov brings together several clearly identified historical elements in one place. Above Šišov, the present-day Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands at the centre of a fortified hillfort. Ceramic fragments found on this hillfort also provide evidence of Slavic settlement from the 8th to the 10th century. The church, hillfort and manor house thus give the place different chronological and architectural points of reference.

Culture

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Šišov was completed in 1781. Its tower was added in 1821. Inside, the main altar dates from the time when the church was built; its columned architecture is complemented by wooden angel figures. The present-day church does not stand in isolation, but at the centre of the fortified hillfort above the village. The ceramic fragments found there point to a Slavic settlement dating from the 8th to the 10th century.

A second focal point is the Leidenfrost manor house and its associated park. Both are registered as national cultural monuments under ÚZPF number 2188. The Šišov manor house is a two-storey neoclassical building erected on older foundations. Thus, the same historic complex brings together a neoclassical building, older structural foundations and the sacred centre of the hillfort.

Nature

The historic park lies east of the Šišov manor house and extends along both banks of the Livina stream. Entire avenues of coniferous trees were planted along the paths, especially spruces, firs and larches.

Paths and Uses

The Šišov manor house can be reached from the north via a local road. From the south, an access road leads to the building through a chestnut avenue. A cycling route also runs through Šišov. The open meadows in the manor house park and in Šišov Park are currently used for sports and physical education activities. Thus, in addition to the historic buildings, current uses and the existing road and cycling connections are also identified as components of the place.
