Pečeňany: Bell Tower, Church Building and Rural History

Pečeňany is situated in the gently hilly terrain of the uplands, away from the main transport routes. At the same time, the village is connected to the state road network via Road III/1835. A sports complex with a football pitch is located in the southeastern part of the built-up area. Culture and History

Pečeňany is home to a bell tower dating from the late 18th century. The structure is masonry-built and prismatic, with sound openings on the upper floor. A 20th-century chapel also houses a Baroque bell from the 18th century. Together with the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, this creates a picture in which different architectural and historical layers stand side by side.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is a modern church building from the late 20th century. It stands on a hill in the eastern part of Pečeňany. The building has a single nave and an irregular rectangular floor plan, a projecting prismatic tower, and stained-glass windows with biblical motifs.

The local history also reaches far back. Pečeňany developed from a settlement inhabited by Pechenegs in the 11th and 13th centuries. During this period, the ruler assigned them guard duties. Pečeňany is mentioned in written records in 1323 as “Besenyev” and “Bezenew.” The two historical forms of the name are therefore among the surviving written records for the village.

Events

Pečeňany’s public life includes several recurring events. The “Furmanské preteky” took place in 2023 and 2024. Events were held in Pečeňany under the name “Fašiangový sprievod” in 2025 and 2026; in 2025, this also included “pochovávanie basy.” “Stavanie mája” took place in 2023 and 2026.

The “Pečeňanský Hviezdoslav” was held in 2026 as its sixth edition. It was a children’s recitation competition. Alongside the buildings and local history, specific event names and their years are therefore also part of Pečeňany’s public profile.
