Šípkov: Nature Trail, Nature and Hrádok – Hotels in Slovakia

Šípkov is a place where the course of paths, karst landscapes, natural areas and commemorative sites can be understood through specific locations. The Slatinský kras Nature Trail runs from Krásna Ves via Bukovinská skala, Veľké lúky, Lažtek and Lupenice to a junction above Šípkov, and continues to Slatina nad Bebravou. The named route connects several landscape features with Šípkov and continues beyond the village to Slatina nad Bebravou. The trail passes through karst terrain without surface water or drinking water. Several points in Slatinský kras offer views of the Strážovské vrchy mountains and the Upper Nitra Basin.

Nature

The Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site also includes the cadastral territory of Šípkov. It consists predominantly of forest and rock habitats. The area is important for the breeding of birds of prey and owls, including the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the Eurasian pygmy owl (Aegolius funereus).

Culture and history

At Hrádok in Šípkov, a stone tower with a ground plan measuring 6 × 6 metres dominated the site. Hrádok Šípkov is one of the fortifications located on the summits of small hills. The Hrádok above Šípkov is a ruined castle dating from the 13th to the 14th century.

Traditional folk architecture has also been preserved in Šípkov. This includes typical rural settlement forms known as “houses with height”. Another memorial site is located near the Lupenica sheepfold: the monument there commemorates 22 people who were executed in November 1944. In the village itself, the bell tower contains an old Baroque bell from the workshop of Trnava bell founder Ján Ernest Christelly. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a point of interest in Šípkov.

Getting around

Hrádok Šípkov can be reached from Šípkov on foot via a forest path in approximately 5 to 10 minutes; the walk is easy. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands in the centre of Šípkov, north of the municipal office. A monument to the victims of the Slovak National Uprising stands to the left of the Šípkov municipal office. Another monument to the victims of the Slovak National Uprising is located in Šípkov on the main road opposite house no. 181.
