Kostolec: Hotels and the PP Bosmany Nature Monument

Above Kostolec lies the PP Bosmany Nature Monument, designated in 1994 and covering an area of 7.335 hectares. It consists of three rock towers and a rock massif behind them, reaching a height of 659 metres. This nature monument offers views of the Manínska Gorge and the Kostolecká Gorge.

Nature

In the vicinity of Kostolec, the Kostolecká Gorge is approximately 500 metres long and covers nearly 30 hectares. It has been a nature reserve since 1970. Because of its rock overhang, the gorge near Kostolec is used as a climbing area.

Trails and Routes

Route 2305 is available for a cycling trip. It is marked in blue, designated as an easy recreational MTB route, and is 17 kilometres long. Its surface alternates between asphalt and gravel. The route passes through the Kostolecká Gorge and then continues to Kostolec. It is described as an easy route that can also be completed by families with children.

The marked routes also include the 16-kilometre hiking route from Považská Teplá to Súľov. It passes through the Kostolecká Gorge, Kostolec and Vrchteplá. Near Kostolec, a red-marked hiking trail runs through the Kostolecká Gorge from Považská Teplá to Súľovské skaly, Hričovské Podhradie and Žilina.

The municipality of Kostolec lies behind the Kostolecká Gorge on the red-marked hiking trail. The marked trail to the Kostolecká Gorge and onward to Kostolec is marked in red, and in some sections also in green or yellow.

Culture and History

The writer Peter Jilemnický worked as a teacher in Kostolec from 1932 to 1936. A memorial plaque and a bust of Peter Jilemnický stand in front of the former school building in Kostolec. A permanent exhibition about his life and work is housed in the attic of a memorial room in Kostolec.

Kostolec has archaeological sites with settlement traces from the Early Stone Age, dating to around 22,000 BC, and from the Late Stone Age, dating to around 2,000 BC. A Late Stone Age dwelling site at the edge of a rock face beside the road to Kostolec yielded pottery, a loom weight, copper spirals, radiolarite and obsidian. The obsidian found in Kostolec originated in the Vihorlat region and indicates long-distance contacts of the local population as early as the 3rd millennium BC.
