Stupné: Hotels between cycle paths and cultural heritage

Stupné lies between Jasenica and Brvnište in the Papradnianska Valley. The 46-kilometre-long, blue-marked Vážska cyklomagistrála Udiča–Považie cycle route passes through the village; its course includes Papradno, Brvnište and Jasenica. Another 35-kilometre-long cycle route marked blue and yellow leads from Považská Bystrica via Jasenica, Stupné, Brvnište and Papradno.

Cycle Paths and Landscape

Near Stupné, the Papradnianska Valley is bordered by the Javorníky Mountains to the north. In this section of the Papradnianska Valley, traditional log-house architecture is scattered across the Kopanici area. The Žeravica area is also one of the distinctive landscape features: rare plants and animals occur there.

Culture and History

Stupné was first mentioned in writing in 1416. The settlement from which Stupné originated moved from the “Spád” area to a more spacious location in the valley; this move is associated with the name Stupné. The chapel in Stupné is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary and was built between 1980 and 1982. It contains a wooden statue of the Seven Sorrows of Mary dating from 1805, which is considered a cultural monument.

The amateur theatre tradition in Stupné began in 1935 under the direction of Ondrej Balej. Under his direction, the amateur theatre also rehearsed the comedy “Strašidlo”. The Ivana-Piško Theatre performed three times at Scénická žatva in Martin.

Two bells hang in the bell tower of Stupné: the larger is dedicated to Saint Cyril and the smaller to Saint Methodius. The Stations of the Cross on the Calvary in Stupné comprise fourteen stations made of wood and metal; three large wooden crosses stand at the final station.

Nature and Local Trails

A Stations of the Cross trail leads from Stupné to the summit of Žeravica. The summit features an artificial terrace and a simple earthwork fortification. The summit terrace is relatively easily accessible from the north via a ridge. A rest area for tourists was also built in the Potoky district of Stupné. Support was provided for organizing an annual ascent by local residents to Holý vrch for the Feast of the Epiphany, Three Kings’ Day.

The natural amphitheatre in Stupné is used mainly for the Hodový Jarmok and other local cultural events.

Local Life

The Stupniansky Hodový Jarmok took place in the municipality of Stupné and was announced as its 22nd edition. Traditional handicrafts and homemade cuisine are offered at the Stupniansky Hodový Jarmok. At the 2025 Stupniansky Hodový Jarmok, visitors could view a presentation of the traditional form of housing in Stupné. The POSPB events calendar for 2026 lists the Stupniansky Hodový Jarmok for 13 September 2026 in Stupné.
