Plevník-Drienové: Discover nature, excursions and hotels

Plevník-Drienové lies within the Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site. Between forest and rocky habitats, bodies of water, viewpoints and local cultural sites, the municipality reveals several specifically named facets that can be explored independently.

Nature and water

The Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site consists predominantly of forest and rocky habitats. At the same time, it is important for the breeding of birds of prey and owls, including the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the boreal owl (Aegolius funereus).

Jazero Sihoť is a body of water that formed on the site of a former gravel pit in Plevník-Drienové. The educational trails around Jazero Sihoť feature information panels about the nearby fauna and flora; they also provide information about the history of Plevník-Drienové and its surroundings. A safe access route to Jazero Sihoť was created for visitors with disabilities in cooperation with the municipality.

At Jazero na Sihoti, there is an area for birdwatching and an introduction to ornithology. The park at Jazero na Sihoti includes the “NABOSO” barefoot sensory fitness trail. Fishing is permitted there with a permit; interested persons must call to receive information and instructions on obtaining a fishing permit.

Excursions and viewpoints

The tradition of the Jozefovské excursions leads to Havrania skala, the highest peak in the municipality at 835 m. At the viewpoint on Malý Manín stands a Slovak double cross erected by members of the local tourist association in 2004 with the support of the municipality.

The New Year's Eve excursion to Malý Manín also continues to take place. Afterwards, kapustnica is traditionally served at the mountain hut near Dlhé lúky.

Literature and customs

The Dominik Tatarka Memorial Room was established in 1991 on the grounds of the local primary school. In 12 display cases, it presents photographs, newspaper articles, documents and manuscripts from the writer's private and public life. The school offers the public guided tours of the memorial room with expert commentary.

The Dominika Tatarku Primary School has organized the nationwide literary competition “O cenu Dominika Tatarku” for 21 years. The competition is announced each March, with the ceremonial award ceremony taking place in May. The local events calendar also includes regular performances by the Dúbravček folk group with a Christmas program. Dúbravček also regularly organizes a carnival procession with masks in Plevník-Drienové, as well as the traditional burial of the double bass.

Distillery and history

The municipality of Plevník-Drienové has operated the distillery since 2021, offering fruit distillation there in a traditional wood-fired distillation plant. The distillery in Plevník was first mentioned in 1767. Spirits from the Plevník distillery received a medal for the high quality of the product at the Upper Hungarian Exhibition in Žilina in 1903.

The Chapel of Saint Stephen the King is a late-Classical chapel from the mid-19th century. After the previous building collapsed in 1824, a wooden bell tower with a wooden cross was first erected on the same site in 1831; the Chapel of Saint Stephen the King was completed in 1855.
