Vrchteplá: Hotels, Nature and Commemorative Culture

Vrchteplá lies amid the touristically significant Súľovské skaly, within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area and in the immediate vicinity of the Manínska tiesňava National Nature Reserve. Memorial sites and recurring events, as well as marked trails through the surrounding landscape, are also part of the village’s appearance and history.

Landscape and Nature

Vrchteplá’s location is defined by several protected and scenically distinctive areas. The village lies within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The Manínska tiesňava National Nature Reserve is located in the immediate vicinity, while the Súľovské skaly surround Vrchteplá. The Manínska tiesňava educational trail includes the section “tiesňava pod Vrchteplou”.

Memorial Sites and Local History

The monument to those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising stands on Hôrka hill above the village centre. Partisans who fell in the surrounding area were buried there; the monument’s present form dates from 1978. Since 1977, astronomers have gathered around the monument near Vrchteplá to observe the Perseid meteor shower.

The Pamätná izba SNP is located in the former elementary school. The building still also serves as a chapel. Since 1979, visitors have been able to learn more about the events of the Slovak National Uprising there. Celebrations of the Slovak National Uprising take place in Vrchteplá every year on 29 August.

The annual calendar also includes regular events at the monument and in the village. On 30 April, a wreath-laying ceremony is held at the SNP monument in Vrchteplá to mark the liberation of Vrchteplá. The popular Maypole-raising ceremony also takes place in Vrchteplá on the same day.

Hiking and Cycling

The Manínska tiesňava educational trail is a 15.8-kilometre, self-guided circular hiking trail with twelve stations. The walking time is five to six hours, and the trail is accessible year-round. The first section, with information boards in the direction of the gorge below Vrchteplá, runs along a state road and can be travelled by bicycle or with a pram.

A cycling route leads over the Hoľazne ridge, directly along the border between Vrchteplá and Plevník-Drienové, to Havrania skala. From there, it offers a wide view of Veľký and Malý Manín, the Javorníky Mountains, the Mikšovská Reservoir, as well as Bytča and its surroundings.

Several connections are available for longer cycling routes. An MTB connection leads from Prečín via Bodiná, Vrchteplá, Kostolec, Plevník-Drienové and Lávka to Mikšová, where it connects to the Vážska cyklomagistrála. In Prečín, it connects to the Rajecká cyklomagistrála. The Považský hrad–Manínska Tiesňava cycling route also leads to Vrchteplá; from the signpost in the village, it continues along the blue-marked cycling route.

A route from Vrchteplá to Súľov runs over asphalt and gravel to the saddle below Havrania skala, then descends through the Čierny potok area to the state road to Súľov-Hradná. The Jilemnického 25-ka tourist hiking march also takes place in Vrchteplá in April.

Winter Connection

When snow conditions are suitable, a cross-country skiing connection runs from Považská Teplá via Vrchteplá to Súľov.
