Horný Bar: Hotels, Danube Cycle Route and Nature

Horný Bar is located on the left bank of the Danube on the island of Žitný ostrov. This island is surrounded by the Large and Small Danube branches. The municipality lies entirely within the protected water management area of Žitný ostrov. The landscape therefore includes water management structures, land used for agriculture, remaining wetlands, and the wildlife of the Danube island.

Nature

The feeder canal of the Gabčíkovo waterworks runs through the territory of Horný Bar; seepage canals run along its embankments. Former river branches, marshes, and reed beds in the area were drained, and fertile arable land was created in their place. At the same time, former river branches, meanders, and sand dunes have been preserved in the surrounding area. Botanically particularly interesting wetlands developed around them. Known plant species occur around wet meadows and water basins. Waterfowl in particular characterize the wildlife around Horný Bar and on Žitný ostrov.

Cycle Route and Connections

The International Danube Cycle Route runs along the feeder canal near Horný Bar. It is part of the EuroVelo 6 corridor and has two branches in the Horný Bar area. Near Horný Bar, a newly built bridge leads from the International Danube Cycle Route across the seepage canal into the municipality. Several regional bus routes provide direct connections from Horný Bar to Bratislava, Šamorín, Dunajská Streda, and Gabčíkovo, as well as to the surrounding municipalities.

Culture

Horný Bar is home to the parish church of Saint Stephen of Hungary, dedicated to Saint Stephen the King. It was built in 1778 in the Baroque-Classical style on the site of an earlier Gothic church and partly from materials taken from it. Set into the walls of the church are two stone tombstones dating from 1584 and 1606.

In the Šuľany district of Horný Bar, the Church of Saint Anne was built in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 14th century. It was altered in the 15th and 17th centuries and given a Baroque appearance in the 18th century. The church has a single-nave interior that ends at the sacristy with a polygonal termination. On the north side of its tower, it preserves an original keyhole-shaped loophole.

The former Šuľany manor house was a two-storey building in the late Renaissance style with a square floor plan, probably built in the 17th century. It was later converted into a monastery and, in the 20th century, into a granary. Today, only the walls of the original building remain. Horný Bar was also once home to the Amadé family’s castle with four towers. According to some sources, Mátyás Bél wrote his historical works there.
