Štvrtok Na Ostrove: Hotels, Church and Cultural Monuments

Štvrtok Na Ostrove can be explored through its specific architectural and memorial landmarks. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint James the Greater is registered as a national cultural monument in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic. Its foundations date from the mid-13th century; the main nave is late Romanesque and features columns inserted at a later date. The church is located directly on the main road in an freely accessible area.

Culture

The Trinity Column stands in the park by the church. The municipality’s residents had it erected in 1900, and in 2000 it was restored using funds from the local government. Its group of figures represents the Holy Trinity. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand on the pedestal, while a group of figures depicting the Madonna and Saint Anne is located in a niche.

In front of the cultural centre stands a statue of Saint Florian on a high column. The polychrome stone sculpture dates from 1893. In front of house no. 133 there is also a sandstone wayside cross, which Mihály Sill had erected in 1799. In the field towards Bratislava stands the Fehér kereszt wayside cross. Jakub Sill had it erected in 1913 together with his wife Žofia Füle; a statue of Saint Anne stands on the pedestal. In the courtyard of house no. 48 there is a former wayside cross from 1913, with a stone Pietà group attached to its pedestal.

Further memorial sites can be found in the public streetscape. The monument to those who fell in the First World War from 1914–1918 stands in the park behind the cultural centre and was restored in 2000. A new monument to those who fell in the Second World War stands in the local cemetery. A 541-year-old death bell is located in the church museum of Štvrtok na Ostrove. The Fájdalmas Kereszt, a wayside cross, is one of the historic monuments of Štvrtok na Ostrove. House no. 64 is also designated “Ľudový dom”: it is a residential building from 1927 whose stylistic architectural design has been preserved.

Local Cultural Life

The Csemadok organisation of Štvrtok na Ostrove has held the “Dom hier” monthly since 2005 for children aged 6 to 15. As part of this program, participants learn about forgotten folk crafts and old folk customs. In addition, the local Csemadok organisation holds a Month of the Mother Tongue every November, featuring literature, essay-writing, and grammar competitions for young people.
