Moravany nad Váhom – Culture, Nature and Hotels
Moravany nad Váhom lies in the valley of the Striebornica stream at the western foothills of the Považský Inovec. The Moravianska Venuša is a figurine carved from mammoth ivory during the Gravettian, discovered in the area of Moravany nad Váhom.
History and Culture
Moravany nad Váhom first appears in written records in 1348 under the name Marwan. The village landscape includes Kostol sv. Martina z Tours, with a medieval core dating from the 14th century. Its southern chapel was built in 1757 on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the first half of the 13th century. The Moravany nad Váhom manor house also reflects several historical construction phases: originally, it was a medieval complex of several independent buildings; it acquired its present appearance after a reconstruction at the end of the 16th century.
The history of the surrounding area is also evident in old routes used for transport and work. In the Middle Ages, a frequently used road connecting Nitra with Moravia passed through Trhovičná lúka. A former forestry narrow-gauge railway connected Moravany nad Váhom with the Jelenie Jamy locality. It was built in 1900 and served to transport timber and people from the surrounding mountains. The railway was 12 kilometres long and therefore belongs to the former infrastructure of the locality, not to a present-day means of transport.
Landscape and Nature
At the eastern edge of Moravany nad Váhom, at the end of Hlboká Street, lies Veľký jarok, also known as Hlboký jarok. It is an erosion gully up to 20 metres deep and approximately 100 metres long in Quaternary loess sediments. Veľký jarok is designated as a protected natural monument with the fourth level of protection; the designation took effect on 1 September 2004.
Veľký jarok is currently accessible to visitors via a turn-off from a green-marked hiking trail. Another landscape connection is provided by the Jelenie jamy educational trail. It can be accessed east of Moravany nad Váhom in the Striebornica valley; its starting point is in the Volavec locality, 300 metres beyond the Striebornica water reservoir. The trail runs below Sokolie skaly, where preserved thermophilous fauna and flora occur.
Hiking Trails
The Jelenie jamy educational trail was revitalised in 2025, renamed from the Moravany nad Váhom educational trail and extended into a 12.5-kilometre circular route. The circular route is listed as having 460 metres of ascent. Its current route description therefore differs significantly from that of the former „Moravany nad Váhom“ educational trail.
The former „Moravany nad Váhom“ educational trail was 5.3 kilometres long and had 340 metres of ascent. It was designated as a self-guided walking route open year-round and connected to hiking and ski routes. This information refers to the former educational trail and preserves its status at that time.
Cycling
The blue-marked cycle route 2208 starts in Moravany nad Váhom. It leads via Výtoky to Nová Lehota. Along its route, asphalt, paved paths and forest roads alternate. The route thus complements the historical and landscape routes with a designated connection through the area surrounding the locality.
