Chtelnica: Culture, Nature and Regional Traditions

Chtelnica is home to a protected castle complex, national cultural monuments, traditional craftsmanship and landscapes of the Little Carpathians. Between the museum, churches, reservoir and recurring events, the town reveals many specific historical and regional connections.

Culture

Chtelnica Castle and its grounds are a national cultural monument (NKP 881). The protected complex includes the castle, four pavilions, a park and sculptures. A regional museum is housed in the restored cellars of the castle, documenting and presenting the history of the former town of Chtelnica and its surroundings. Visitors to the regional museum can view the spacious cellars where large quantities of wine were once stored.

The Chapel of the Crucifixion is located in the East Pavilion. Count Erdődy had it built in 1769; it is open to museum visitors. In the North Pavilion, the Malokarpatská galéria presents the artistic work of regional artists. Its exhibition spaces extend over three floors, while the exhibition changes regularly.

History

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity and its grounds are a national cultural monument (NKP 887). The grounds include the church, the parish house and a cross. The church itself is an artistically valuable Neoclassical building with Empire and Rococo elements.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist stands on a hill in the northwest of Chtelnica. Together with the remains of a Renaissance fortification, it has long been a landmark of the town and is probably considered Chtelnica’s oldest architectural and historical monument.

The Chapel of Saint Roch is situated in a mountain valley surrounded by the forests of the Little Carpathians, next to a spring with clean mountain water. The inhabitants of Chtelnica built it between 1680 and 1688 to give thanks for the end of a plague. Pilgrimages to the chapel have resumed.

Nature

A considerable part of Chtelnica’s cadastral territory belongs to the Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. The Výtok recreational area includes a spring, a reservoir and the adjacent valley. The reservoir below Pálenica Hill offers recreational opportunities for visitors from the surrounding region.

The “Poznaj Chtelnicu” educational trail leads from Chtelnica along a blue-marked cycle route to the Chtelnica Reservoir, circles the reservoir and returns via the cycle route. The route is 10 km long.

Traditions

“Pod šable” is a centuries-old custom of the Chtelnica carnival season and is still alive today. Nowadays, on a Sunday afternoon, a selected and trained group of young men wearing identical clothing gathers in the market square, accompanied by a brass band.

Local winegrowing in Chtelnica expanded from the 17th century onward. The town lay at the northern edge of the Little Carpathians wine-growing region. Chtelnica pottery also has a distinctive and unique tradition in western Slovakia due to its method of production.

Events

The “Beh oslobodenia Chtelnice” is a recurring running event. It includes the 39th edition on 27 April (Saturday) and the 41st edition on 25 April 2026 (Saturday). Chtelnica’s traditional fair was held on 18 May 2024 in the market square and on 17 May 2025.
