Senitz: Cultural History, Nature Trails and Kunovská Reservoir

Senitz combines sites of cultural and historical interest with nature trails and the Kunovská Reservoir recreational area. The Tourist Information Centre of the city of Senica is an ideal starting point for discovering the unique Záhorie region. The Archaeological Exhibition focuses on the discovery of part of a woolly mammoth tusk, which was found during the construction of the Kunovská Reservoir and is considered possible evidence of hunting. At the same time, it documents the settlement of Senica throughout all periods of human history.

Nature

The educational trail follows a 5 km route from Senica City Park towards the Kunovská Reservoir along the Teplica stream. The Senica–Kunovská Reservoir educational trail is lined with nine information boards and ends at an interactive environmental corner for children, which introduces them to nature and its inhabitants in a playful way. In addition, the Senica–Kunovská Reservoir route begins at Senica’s central bus station and leads to the recreational area after 5.5 km.

The Kunovská Reservoir includes a sports area with equipment rental, as well as a sandy beach with parasols and a boathouse where water attractions can be rented.

Culture

Senica is home to an Evangelical church, a Neoclassical church of tolerance built in 1783 and 1784. Its tower was subsequently incorporated into the gabled façade of the church building in 1794. The Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Virgin Mary dates from 1631. It was originally Evangelical; in 1654, it became Catholic.

The Záhorská galéria Jána Mudrocha in Senica is a publicly accessible gallery. It is housed in a late Baroque chateau that was probably completed around 1760. Other registered cultural monuments include the statue of Saint Florian, which is registered in the Slovak Republic as an immovable national cultural monument and dates from the second half of the 18th century, as well as Sokolovňa. This is a restored 19th-century summer house registered as a national cultural monument of the Slovak Republic.

History

The Stará Senica exhibition has been part of the museum’s permanent exhibitions since 2020. Using a 3D city model, it shows Senica’s historic centre around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The model also includes historic buildings in Senica that no longer exist in the city today.

The Škodáček Mill near Pivák is open to the public. It presents the history of milling, traditional technical crafts and the history of Čáčov. Visitors can view preserved technical equipment there.
