Hradište Pod Vrátnom: Culture, Nature and Hotels

Hradište pod Vrátnom lies in the valley of the Brezovský potok and combines a multifaceted local history with protected landscapes and marked trails. Between the church, cemetery, historic traces and natural monuments, a vivid picture emerges of a Slovak village whose sights are spread across various hills and landscape areas.

Landscape

The Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area is part of the cadastral territory of Hradište pod Vrátnom. In the Myjavská pahorkatina, the Kyseľová natural monument protects a rocky forest steppe with rare, endangered and protected thermophilous plant species. The Mníchova úboč natural monument is also located there. It preserves rock formations of the georelief and a thermophilous rocky steppe with several endangered and protected plant species.

Culture and History

A small fortified settlement dating from the 9th to 10th century was established on Tomišovec Hill above the village, below a steep slope on the Brezovský potok. This dating is based on pottery shards that were found there. The church stands on Háj Hill in the northern part of the village. Its three-sided apse contains a preserved Gothic-vaulted window.

The Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1845 on a hill northeast of the village, above the Vlčie jamy sandstone quarry. Services were held there while the church was being repaired after the 1906 earthquake. In the Dolný koniec district, a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk with a chronostich dating from 1759 also stands in a small park at the intersection of the state road and railway.

The parish cemetery around the church is well maintained and enclosed. It contains stone crosses from the early 19th century, known as “dobrovodské” because of their craftsmanship. A large stone cross at the cemetery entrance bears the year 1783 and the restoration inscription “Reno 1910”. The local memorial heritage also includes the war memorial in Hradište pod Vrátnom: it features a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and plaques commemorating local victims of the First and Second World Wars.

Stanica Haradicha uses a historic railway station building as a cultural centre for the community of friends and supporters of OZ Haradicha. The Hradišťanka brass band is also part of the village’s cultural profile and is known beyond the borders of Slovakia.

Hiking and Cycling

The green-marked Chodník Jána Hollého hiking trail, TZT 5107, runs from Hradište pod Vrátnom via Dobrá Voda to Pustá Ves and is 18.8 km long. Another designated route, 8124, runs from Prekážka to Hradište pod Vrátnom and is 13.5 km long.

For cyclists, route 5229 connects Hradište pod Vrátnom with Brezová pod Bradlom. Cycling route 5228 connects Prietrž, Žuščíci and Hradište pod Vrátnom; at the same time, it links settlements in the Myjavská pahorkatina.

Events

The municipality’s 2026 events calendar lists the railway station as the venue for “Hradišské vábenie” on 12 September 2026. “Hradišské vábenie” is a cultural event for local and visiting audiences, including children and adults.

The event “Prehliadka dychových hudieb” begins in the grounds of the cultural centre; the documented edition was the 30th edition. “Vrátnofest” is a folk and country festival in Hradište pod Vrátnom. The documented edition was the 12th edition and took place on 6 June in the courtyard of the cultural centre. At the festival, Záhorácky guľáš and Kopaničiarske trdelníky were announced as food offerings.
