Geographical location

Senica lies at the transition between the Záhorie Lowland and the Myjava and Chvojnica hilly regions. The city is also located at a crossroads of historic trade routes: the “Amber Road” ran from north to south along the Morava, while a trade route running from west to east was known in the Middle Ages as the “Česká cesta” and connected Prague with Buda.

Culture

The Senica Museum opened in 2020 and is dedicated to regional history. It has three permanent exhibitions, ranging from local prehistory and the origins of Senica on the Česká cesta to life in the city in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The archaeological exhibition documents the early Slavic settlement evidenced at several archaeological sites in Senica.

The “Stará Senica” exhibition uses a 3D city model to show Senica’s historic centre around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and has been part of the Senica Museum’s permanent exhibition since 2020. The Senica City Museum is housed in a reconstructed 19th-century summer palace belonging to the landowner Vagyon, formerly the Sokolovna, and features an interactive 21st-century exhibition using modern technology.

The Chapel of Saint Anne is Senica’s oldest architectural monument. It is a single-nave Gothic building from the early 15th century with a polygonal apse and a simply Baroque-style façade. The Roman Catholic parish Church of the Virgin Mary in Senica dates from 1631, while the Protestant church was built in 1783–1784 in the Classical style.

The Záhorská galéria Jána Mudrocha is housed in the architecturally impressive rooms of a Late Baroque château, probably completed in 1760. A small chapel with an illusionistic Baroque fresco is located in the upper part of the château’s entrance tower.

The Škodáčkov roller mill near Pivák is open to the public. Preserved technical equipment and a permanent exhibition present the history of milling, traditional technical crafts and Čáčov. The Škodáčkov Mill is the only surviving mill in Senica’s Čáčov district.

Nature and activities

The sandy beach at the Kunovská priehrada reservoir is intended for recreation, sunbathing and swimming. The 128-kilometre Záhorská Cyclomagistrála begins in Senica, is designated as an easy long-distance cycle route and is suitable for road bikes along its entire length. The 12-kilometre Chodník Viktora Beniaka hiking trail leads from Senica via Kunov towards Branč.

The Letné kúpalisko in Senica has a large pool with a slide and diving board.
