Boleráz: Churches, Landscape and Water Reservoir

Boleráz is located in the Trnavská pahorkatina, approximately 14 km northwest of the district town of Trnava. The local history brings church construction, settlement traces, traditional festivals and a varied landscape closely together.

Culture

The present parish church of Saint Michael the Archangel was founded on 1 May 1786; construction work was completed on 15 September 1787. The main altar of the parish church is dominated by a statue showing Saint Michael the Archangel slaying a dragon.

At Hradisko Zámok, approximately 1 km southwest of Boleráz, a fortified settlement with a rampart, palisades and a pointed ditch existed around 1500 BC. The settlement history also includes at least five settlement sites in Boleráz associated with the Boleráz group.

Another church is located in Klčovany (Boleráz): the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque single-nave church with an integrated tower and was restored in 1856. Boleráz's regular cultural calendar includes the traditional “Pochovávanie basy” before the beginning of Lent, as well as celebrations for the Feast of Saint Catherine.

Landscape

The Trnávka stream crosses the unforested area of Boleráz in a flat, broad valley.

The northern part of the cadastral area of Boleráz belongs to the Podmalokarpatská pahorkatina and has the characteristics of a lowland hilly landscape. By contrast, the southern part of the cadastral area of Boleráz in the Trnavská tabuľa has a rolling plain landscape. The hilly terrain and rolling plain therefore form two distinct landscape types within the municipality.

Water and Sport

The Boleráz water reservoir was built in the 1960s. In addition to its recreational function, it is also important for flood protection. The sports complex of TJ Slavoj Boleráz includes a football pitch and other sports areas.
