Horné Dubové: Church, History and Hotels

Horné Dubové is home to the Baroque Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin, regarded as the village’s most important monument. Its construction history, monuments and connections to personalities from Slovak culture give the village a clearly recognisable historical character.

Culture and History

The church’s present appearance was created in 1720 through the reconstruction of the ruins of an earlier Gothic church. Thus, one building combines the memory of a Gothic predecessor with the Baroque form that characterises the Church of Saint Martin today.

The church’s history also includes its two bells. The large bell was commissioned by the community in 1695, while the small bell was acquired in 1795. Both years mark separate stages in the history handed down about the church. Another dated memorial can be found in the village: the statue of the Sacred Heart was erected in Horné Dubové on 3 July 1927.

The monuments of Horné Dubové also include the statue of the Madonna and Child. Personalities from the village and its ecclesiastical history have also been commemorated. Emil Krapka was born in Horné Dubové on 17 July 1925. He was a Jesuit, theologian, underground teacher, organist and spiritual father.

The Slovak writer Juraj Fándly is also associated with Horné Dubové. He taught and preached in Horné Dubové from 1780 to 1807. The parish archives preserve sermons that Juraj Fándly delivered to the inhabitants of Horné Dubové during the Dubovské hody celebrations.

Landscape and Place Name

The name Horné Dubové also refers to the former landscape. It derives from oak forests that extensively covered the area around the settlement before they were cleared. The place name thus preserves a connection to a landscape whose vegetation covered a considerably larger area in the past.

Transport and Surroundings

Horné Dubové has three bus stops: bytovka PD, dolný koniec and ZŠ. Outside the southern edge of the village lies the Jewish cemetery, 750 metres southwest along a field track. Its location is therefore precisely described by both the direction and the distance, as well as by access via a field track.

Also make sure that the total price is shown in full and check which conditions apply to the selected occupancy. Directly comparing these fields reveals differences between offers without making blanket assumptions about facilities, costs or availability. Also check the stated accommodation type, the indicated occupancy, included services, and payment and cancellation conditions. If several offers are displayed, these details can be reviewed side by side. This makes it clear which costs are already included in the total price and which conditions apply to the selected occupancy. The specific fields displayed for each individual offer are decisive, not a general expectation of Horné Dubové.
