Bizeljsko: Paths through Wine Landscapes and Culture

Bizeljsko demonstrates its close connection to vineyards and wine especially along the Pot k repnicam trail. It leads from Stara vas in Bizeljsko to Brezovica, which is known for its repnice. Along the way, the trail offers insights into a landscape and way of life that have been associated with vineyards and wine for centuries.

Nature

Another trail also begins in Stara vas: the Pot ob Sotli leads across meadows towards the Sotla, without any incline. Along this trail, visitors can observe plants and birds as well as hares and deer. There are also beaver nests along the Sotla. This means that the same trail combines open meadows, the river area and specific observations of wildlife and plant life.

Wine and Crafts

At Vinarstvo in zbirka majolk Babič, the winery's own wines are sampled with Bizeljsko buckwheat cake. A visit also includes a majolica collection with more than 1,500 vessels from 63 countries. Wine and regional cuisine are presented here alongside a collection whose size and international origin are clearly specified.

Culture and History

The Church of St. Lawrence preserves several historical layers. Part of its bell tower probably dates from the 15th century, while the present church building was commissioned in 1725. The Baroque furnishings include the altar of John of Nepomuk and a pulpit dating from 1854.

A further insight into the region's material culture is provided by the Permanent Ethnographic Collection of Marija Sušnik. It displays agricultural equipment, dishes and tools, as well as books and photographs focusing on viticulture.

In Brezovica in Bizeljsko, Balon Repnica is now open to visitors. It preserves a shelter used during the Second World War, which was connected to a wine cellar by a narrow underground tunnel.

In the immediate surroundings of Bizeljsko lies Pišečki grad Castle. In the wider regional area are Novi Dvori Castle and Medvedgrad Castle. In Drenovec stands the Church of St. Anthony the Hermit, which probably dates from the 16th century and preserves Gothic architectural elements as well as an altar from the 18th century. This church was visited by Croatian pilgrims on January 17, the feast day of its patron saint, and on June 13, the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua.

Geographical Location

The immediate surroundings of Bizeljsko also include Mount Spiček and the summit of Kajsov Vrh. In the wider regional area, alongside the castles mentioned above, are Mount Kuna Gora and Mount Bohor.
