Zgornja Pohanca between milling culture and landscapes

In Zgornja Pohanca, Rožmanov Mill stands on the Močnik stream in the southern part of the settlement. The single-storey wooden building has a rectangular floor plan and stands on stone and concrete foundations. Next to the mill, a wooden millrace with a sluice and two wooden water wheels have been preserved.

Culture and history

A Roman gravestone dating from the late 1st or early 2nd century AD comes from Zgornja Pohanca. Named historic buildings can also be found in the surrounding area: Pišečki Castle is a castle near Zgornja Pohanca. In the wider regional area are Novi Dvori, a castle, and Pleterje, a monastery.

Below Zgornja Pohanca, the Rudi-Rožanc Monument stands on the left bank of the Močnik stream. It was erected in 1961. Thus, both an archaeological artefact and a clearly dated monument are among the site's specific historical points of reference.

Geographical setting

A bridge over the Močnik stream connects Zgornja Pohanca in the Municipality of Brežice with Zdole in the Municipality of Krško. The surroundings of Zgornja Pohanca also include Spiček, a mountain, Kajsov Vrh, a peak, Bohor, a mountain, and Veliki Javornik, a peak.
