Pišece: Castles, Blacksmithing and Forest Trails

Pišece combines castle history, a tradition of craftsmanship, and trails through the forest and along the water. Historic buildings, memorial sites, springs, and mills add to this picture. In Pišece, cultural traces and tangible landscape connections thus come together.

Culture

Pišece Castle was first mentioned in written sources in the early 14th century. Despite later Baroque and Historicist extensions and renovations, the Romanesque tower dominates the castle’s remaining walls. The castle includes a park with exceptional exotic trees. A forest trail leads from the center of Pišece to Pišece Castle.

The Podgoršek Blacksmithing Museum also preserves a historical connection. Three generations of the Podgoršek family practiced the blacksmithing trade in the former smithy from the second half of the 19th century onward. The museum displays a collection of blacksmithing and craft tools used by the smiths. The memorial collection in the birthplace of Maks Pleteršnik represents another cultural focus. Furniture, personal belongings, and above all his books are displayed in three rooms. The association that currently looks after the Pleteršnik Homestead also organizes the Pleteršnik Days.

In the Penaver area of Pišece, a plague memorial commemorates the plague epidemics and the people’s search for protection through prayer and faith at that time.

Nature

The Gabernica Spring lies below the Orlica in a small cave called Duplo in Pišece. Below the spring there is a functioning mill that has preserved its appearance and continues to mill flour to this day. An educational water trail with seven stations follows the stream from Pišece to Čatež.

Several named landscape and cultural sites lie in the immediate surroundings of Pišece: Pišečki grad is a castle, Spiček is a mountain, and Kajsov Vrh is a summit. The wider regional area also includes Novi Dvori and Medvedgrad castles, as well as the Bohor and Goli Crnik mountains.

Trails

The Pišece Forest Educational Trail is a circular route that begins at the mill in the village of Pišece. It is marked with green-and-yellow signs and includes 11 thematic stations. The forest reserve is the highest point of the Pišece Forest Educational Trail. The circular route therefore leads from its starting point at the mill to an explicitly designated highest point within the educational trail.

Another marked circular route is Pot na Špiček. It begins at the pond below Pišece Castle and reaches a 690-meter-high summit.
