Tabor lies at the transition from the lowlands to the hills. Below the slopes of the surrounding hills, the town is a starting point for interesting hiking and cycling excursions. The landscape around Tabor combines paths, natural monuments and historic sites with regional collections and events.

History and Culture

Tabor was first mentioned in historical records in 1436. A preserved section of the fortification wall can be seen around the Church of St. George in Tabor. It was built towards the end of the 15th century to protect against the Turks.

The Tabor Cultural, Historical and Tourism Association maintains a small museum on the history of the Counts of Žovnek and the Counts of Celje, the Second Peasant Revolt in Slovenia, and Count Schrattenbach. The association’s section for preserving cultural customs includes the production of OjstriÅ¡ki zajÄki and OjstriÅ¡ke Veronika dolls, as well as numerous creative workshops.

Nature

In the municipality of Tabor, Krvavica is designated as a geomorphological, subterranean and botanical natural monument. A stand of yew trees on the western slope of Krvavica is designated as a natural attraction.

In the municipality of Tabor, Krvavica features a natural window 4 metres wide and 2 metres high. A karst cave also opens below the summit of Krvavica, reaching a depth of 21 metres and a length of 30 metres.

Hiking and Cycling

For routes in the area around Tabor, ZajÄeva koÄa follows a fixed seasonal schedule: it is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between May and October. The hut has a dining room with 28 seats and sleeping accommodation for 19 people. From the Tabor pri Vranskem bus stop, an ascent of 2 hours and 15 minutes leads to ZajÄeva koÄa.

In the municipality of Tabor, the Tabor Mountaineering Association maintains trails to Krvavica. In the municipality, Ojstriška vas offers walks through pine forests. The picturesque Church of St. Nicholas also stands there at an exceptional viewpoint.

Regional Traditions

In the centre of Ojstriška vas, the Pepel farm houses a museum collection on beekeeping. Tools formerly used by beekeepers are displayed there. At the Laznik farm, the “Stara štala†contains a tasting room for its air-dried meat products.

Annual Cycle

The ZajÄevi dnevi take place on the first weekend in July. The 31st traditional Å entjurski sejem was held on 20 March 2025 in Tabor, around the municipal building, Dom krajanov Tabor, the POÅ  and Jurijev trg.
