Kojsko Among Churches, Military History and Brda
Above Kojsko stands the Church of the Holy Cross, built around 1500. Its bell tower resembles a small fortress, while the church offers panoramic views extending to the Alps and the Adriatic. Chapels marking the Stations of the Cross lead to the church; on the Feast of the Holy Cross, it comes alive with a procession. The church also houses a Gothic winged altarpiece from 1515. It is considered the only and largest almost completely preserved Gothic winged altarpiece in Slovenia.
Culture and History
The parish church of the Assumption of Mary also preserves several historical layers. The Baroque section was added to a small Gothic church in the second half of the 18th century; only the choir remains of the late Gothic church. Behind the altar is a Venetian-style curia from 1492. The furnishings include four valuable paintings donated by Count Coronini, which more recent studies attribute to the painter De Vito.
On Sveti Križ Hill, the Tabor recalls the town's military history. The complex originally had four defensive towers, built during the Ottoman incursions in the 16th century. The fourth tower is now the church tower. In the center of Kojsko stands a monumental monument to choirmaster Srečko Kumar. Until the First World War, Kojsko was the cultural and economic center of eastern Brda.
The historical character also includes Lower Kojsko Castle. It was built in 1594 and had lower jurisdiction. In its considerably reduced present-day form, numerous inscription panels and stone coats of arms bear witness to the Coronini family. The surviving 300-meter-long single-track railway tunnel „Na kalehih“ also points to the strategic importance of the place during the First World War.
Landscape and Regional Context
Kojsko is located in the wider Brda area, whose landscape is characterized by vineyards, orchards and olive groves. Brda offers cycling tours through narrow, peaceful villages. Thus, regional routes and landscapes are also connected with a stay alongside the buildings and places of remembrance, without reducing the individual locations to a single attraction.
The culinary and agricultural context of Brda includes professionally guided wine tastings and winery tours. These are offered through the list of Open Homesteads.
Surroundings
The Sabotin Peace Park is located nearby. The caverns and trenches on 609-meter-high Sabotin form an open-air museum there. It is complemented by the multimedia Sabotin – Park miru visitor center.
