Culture and History

The parish church of Saint Peter stands on Trg Ivana Roba in Šempeter pri Gorici. After its destruction during the Isonzo Front, it was designed by Maks Fabiani. In 1929, the Archbishop of Gorizia, Frančišek Borgia Sedej, consecrated the church. This brings together at this building its connection to the Isonzo Front, a named architect and an exact consecration date.

Maks Fabiani is also associated with the Coronini Manor House. The manor house dates from the 17th century and was renovated between 1927 and 1930 according to designs by Maks Fabiani. Villa Maffei, also known as Mafejšče, stands next to this manor house. It is located on a walled viewing terrace on the southern slope of Colle San Marco hill, north of the centre of Šempeter pri Gorici.

Below the Šempeter post office there is a small collection on the First World War. Military memorabilia from the Isonzo Front as well as from Šempeter and its surroundings are displayed there. Šempeter’s horticultural heritage also includes early vegetables and Ušaj double-flowered violets.

Events and Exercise

Šempeter’s carnival tradition dates back to 1946. It includes a parade with groups and floats from Slovenia and Italy. The event is therefore part of a tradition that extends beyond the town and involves both countries in the parade, without losing its connection to Šempeter.

Since 1997, “Step Out of the Dark” has also been organised. This is a five-kilometre evening torch run through the streets of Šempeter. Saint Peter’s Day on 29 June includes a local festival and a ball in the square in Šempeter. The three events differ in form, timing and sequence: the parade is followed by an organised evening run and a festival with a ball on a set calendar date.

Another precisely measured facility is the DEŠ climbing wall at the Ivan Rob Primary School in Šempeter. It has more than 8,000 holds over an area of 1,000 square metres. The climbing wall is therefore just as much one of the specifically named places in the town as the buildings, event venues and places of remembrance.

Geographical Location

The Šempeter pri Gorici railway station is located at Cvetlična ulica 46, 5290 Šempeter pri Gorici. Another location reference leads to a viewpoint on the hill. From there, there is a view of Gorizia, the Šempeter plain and Friuli. The railway station and viewpoint therefore mark two different spatial reference points: one has a complete address, while the other is a hill with an explicitly described field of view.
