Moscow Domodedovo Airport (DME) has invested more than $300 million in its expansion. Formerly Russia’s most important commercial airport, it is looking to regain its former strength.
The airport was originally built for domestic traffic in Russia and as a cargo airport. Until the 1990s, it held a leading position in the Soviet Union, serving primarily long-distance routes. When air travel became increasingly unaffordable for Russians in the 1990s, the large airport faced closure.
Since then, a number of international airlines, including British Airways and Swiss, have chosen Moscow Domodedovo as their destination airport. German low-cost airlines such as Germania Express and its sister company Deutsche BA (DBA) also fly to Moscow via Domodedovo.
The renovation turned Domodedovo Airport into a modern terminal with bright waiting areas and a modern check-in hall. Rising passenger numbers suggest that it is once again on its way to becoming Moscow’s most important commercial airport.
The airport is home to Russia’s first private airline, Transaero Airlines. What particularly set this airline apart from other Russian carriers was that it flew exclusively with Western-made Boeing aircraft.
Aeroflot handles all of Moscow’s cargo traffic through Domodedovo.
The airport is about 45 kilometres south of central Moscow and is very well connected by transport. Aeroexpress trains run between Paveletskaya metro station and the airport from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Express bus routes connect the airport with Moscow’s other airports. Public transport is very inexpensive: a couple of euros will get you to the city centre. Taking a taxi from the airport to the city centre is somewhat more expensive and can easily cost 1,500 roubles (about 50 euros, depending on the exchange rate). It is recommended that you use taxis only from the airport’s official taxi ranks.
There is a Sixt car rental desk at the airport.
