Water Landscapes

The Neretva flows through the municipality of Čapljina for a length of 21.6 km. Čapljinka’s “Canoe Safari” tour follows a 10 km route from Božjak to Struga and is operated in tandem canoes for two people. The “Canoe Safari” tour on the Trebižat also includes opportunities for swimming at selected sections of the river. Lunch can also be ordered during the tour and is served in nature.

Nature and Bird Areas

Hutovo Blato is located within the municipalities of Čapljina and Stolac and is considered one of the largest wintering grounds for birds in Europe. Sightseeing tours of the lakes and canals are offered by motorboat; canoes are also rented for birdwatching. This provides different ways to explore the wetland, from travelling through its waterways to observing it from a canoe.

History in the Townscape

The railway station building once stood on today’s town square in the centre of Čapljina. After it was demolished in 1998, four plane trees were planted as reminders of the former narrow-gauge railway. The historic Čapljina I district also preserves the outlines of the old development, with narrow streets and courtyards.

Gradina is the oldest part of Čapljina, dates from the Ottoman period, and has an Oriental-Herzegovinian character. The town’s historical development is therefore reflected both in preserved architectural structures and in traces of former transport routes.

Cultural Monuments

Počitelj is a historic town complex within the municipality of Čapljina. Medieval and Ottoman fortifications and buildings have been preserved. Gabela is home to a national cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, comprising the remains of an old fortress and a stone slab with a winged lion.

Stari most Klepci is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to historical sources, Stari most Klepci was built in 1517. Mogorjelo is considered one of the finest examples of Late Antique architecture in Herzegovina and comprises the remains of a suburban villa rustica dating from the 4th century.

The Cape Tower on the Krupa River, also known as Rt Kula, is a fortification from the Ottoman period in the settlement of Dračevo in the municipality of Čapljina. It has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Štangerova ćuprija is an iron bridge in the village of Sjekose within the municipality of Čapljina, designed by Gustave Eiffel. It is a reminder of the former narrow-gauge railway, which was partially destroyed during the Croatian War and subsequently restored.

Events and Regional Routes

The International Summer Carnival in Čapljina has been held continuously since 1997 and traditionally takes place every year in August. In 2026, the village of Trebižat hosted the XIX International Klapa Festival “Trebižat”, a traditional cultural and music event. It continues an almost two-decade-long tradition of bringing klapa ensembles together and preserving klapa singing.

A longer cycling connection is also part of the regional landscape: the cycling route from Mostar to Ivanica is 134 km long. With the branch from Hum to Trebinje, its total length is 152 km. It runs predominantly through rural areas and is suitable for road bikes and mountain bikes.
