Blagaj: Hotels, Buna Spring and Historic Culture

Blagaj combines historic buildings with Buna Spring and its river landscape. A 240-metre-high cliff rises above Blagaj Tekke.

Culture

Blagaj Tekke stands on the right bank of Buna Spring. The complex was probably built by around 1520 at the latest and has been preserved to this day; it includes a musafirhana and a turbe. A traditional dervish Mevlud tradition is also maintained at Blagaj Tekke at Vrelo Bune.

The historic architectural heritage of Blagaj also includes the Velagić House complex, which is considered one of the most valuable groups of its kind in Herzegovina. The historic area of Blagaj extends along the Buna from the Leho Bridge to the source of the Buna.

History

The settlement of Blagaj, as it is known today, was shaped by urbanisation in the second half of the 15th century during the Ottoman period. Its urban structure took shape in the 16th century. The two dates mark different phases: the development of the present-day settlement began earlier, while its specific urban structure took its form in the following century.

Architectural History

Blagaj Fortress, Stjepan grad, is situated on a natural, level area above steep cliffs to the south, west and north. Its irregular polygonal layout is adapted to the terrain. The complex includes seven square towers, a projecting angle and an entrance to the east. Stjepan grad is considered an independent territorial unit.

Nature

The Buna is a short river with exceptionally clear, high-quality water. It provides a habitat for rare and endemic species such as softmouth trout, nase and marble trout. Buna Spring is considered an outstanding example of an underground karst river and carries approximately 30 m³ of water per second. Vrelo Bune is considered one of the largest springs in Europe.

As a result, the spring area, building and rock formation appear in a clear spatial relationship within the townscape, without the individual elements losing their own historical or natural significance.

Visiting

Visitors can take a boat into the cave at the source of the Buna; knowledgeable guides are available. Free parking spaces are available near the entrance to Blagaj Tekke.
