Zavala – Hotels, Vjetrenica and Historic Sites
The Vjetrenica Cave is specifically located in Zavala: its entrance lies 300 metres east of the centre. The cave system itself is hydrologically active. It comprises four watercourses, numerous smaller periodic watercourses and underground lakes. At the same time, Vjetrenica is considered one of the world’s most important and species-rich biodiversity hotspots for subterranean animals.
Culture
The archaeological site of Crkvina is part of Zavala’s history. The remains of a pre-Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Peter are located there. The same site contains a necropolis with 28 stećak tombstones. Crkvina has the status of a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Zavala Monastery also has a special architectural connection with the landscape: the monastery church is built against a rock that also forms the basis of its northern wall. The oldest written reference to the monastery dates from 1514.
Vjetrenica Cave, together with the architectural ensemble of the village of Zavala, was included in the UNESCO Tentative List of Natural Heritage on 11 December 2007. The first exhibition of the Biospeleological Museum presented topics relating to karst, the Dinarides, Popovo Polje and Vjetrenica Cave, as well as preserved specimens of some of the subterranean fauna.
Activities
The historic narrow-gauge railway known as Ćiro has been revived as a cycling route through tunnels, across bridges and along former railway stations; Zavala is one starting point of the route. A guided 10-kilometre cycling tour on the Ćiro railway line and the routes of Popovo Polje starts and ends directly at the Vjetrenica Cave car park.
