Konjic: Hotels between the Old Bridge, the Neretva and the Mountains

Tito’s Bunker is also part of Konjic’s historical identity. The facility, also known as ARK D-0, is located in Konjic and is used as a museum for tourism purposes. It was built between 1953 and 1979 in complete secrecy over a period of 26 years. Visitors can take part in a guided 90-minute tour.

In Konjic’s inner city area, the Tekijska-Mehmed-Čauševa Mosque stands on the left bank of the Neretva, about 150 metres upstream from the Old Bridge. In March 2006, it was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the only domed mosque in Konjic and is considered the city’s most architecturally valuable mosque.

The Konjic Heritage Museum is located in the historic city centre on the left bank of the Neretva, next to the Old Bridge. It preserves and communicates the cultural and historical identity and heritage of the city of Konjic. At the same time, it serves as a venue for cultural events, presentations, exhibitions and other activities. The birthplace of Zuko Džumhur houses authentic furniture made by woodcarvers from Konjic and decorated with traditional motifs.

Konjic woodcarving is a handicraft with a tradition of more than a hundred years and is part of the local community’s culture. Its cultural heritage was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. The Konjic Woodcarving Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting this Konjic woodcarving tradition. The renewed exhibition offers insights into its history, its masters, its transmission through families across generations and its development into a contemporary creative expression. The renewed museum also includes a small demonstration workshop for woodcarving. In Varda Park in the centre of Konjic, stone monuments are displayed on the left bank of the Neretva in a landscaped park.

The mountains around Konjic offer marked trails, mountain huts and houses, as well as organised hiking tours. Mount Prenj, which is accessible through Konjic’s hiking programme, lies along the long-distance hiking trail Via Dinarica. Another distinctive landscape feature is the Vrtaljica Trail. It leads into a protected botanical reserve of dolomite, where field research identified 360 plant species.

Lake Boračko, located about 20 kilometres from Konjic, can be reached via a paved road. It offers opportunities for swimming, relaxation, leisure activities and fishing.

A rafting route on the Neretva runs from Glavatičevo to Konjic. It is about 23 kilometres long and takes approximately five hours. The experiences described along the route include rapids, secluded beaches and a stop at a waterfall.

Canyoning in the area around Konjic takes place in the canyon of the Rakitnica River. This activity combines swimming, diving, climbing, walking and jumps into the water. A via ferrata and climbing activity is located at the Visit Konjic Outdoor Resort, Mladeškovići 4, Konjic. All equipment is provided, and no prior climbing experience is required. A steel cable runs along a 12.5-metre-high climbing route on artificial rock.
