Čitluk: Wine, Culture and Ecclesiastical Traditions

Čitluk combines ecclesiastical traditions, culture and viticulture. The focus extends from institutions and events in the town to the wider regional surroundings of Čitluk.

Culture

The Kulturno-informativni centar Čitluk organizes cultural events in the municipality of Čitluk, such as the “Dani berbe grožđa”, performances, exhibitions and workshops. The Narodna knjižnica in the cultural centre offers readers more than 9,000 titles. KIC Čitluk emerged from the Narodni univerzitet Čitluk, founded in 1962.

The “Dani berbe grožđa” have traditionally been held in Čitluk since 1955. They take place in September, during the first week after the church feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and last for up to three days. During this event, cultural associations present visitors with part of the local cultural heritage; at the same time, Brotnjo is highlighted as an area with numerous wineries.

Ecclesiastical Traditions

The traditional procession with a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary leads in Čitluk from the votive statue at the town entrance to the parish church of Krista Kralja. The Župa Krista Kralja in Čitluk celebrated its 100th anniversary. During the celebration of this jubilee, the foundation stone for a new parish church in Čitluk was blessed.

Wine and Regional Events

In the wider regional surroundings of Čitluk, Brotnjo is considered a wine-growing area with a long history of grape cultivation and wine production. Blatina and Žilavka are among the most popular grape varieties there. Also in the wider regional surroundings, the Župa Gradnići is considered the oldest parish in Brotnjo and is home to the oldest wine cellar in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Vinarija Čitluk produces a total of more than 50 wine and spirits labels. At its production facilities in the centre of Čitluk, it has a tasting room for up to 100 people. The Čitluk branch of Matica hrvatska holds the traditional event “Kušanje mladog vina” at Hotel Brotnjo, where visitors are offered young wine from Brotnjo for tasting.

Sport and Exercise

Biciklistički klub Brotnjo and the municipality of Čitluk organized the cycling tour “Biciklom kroz vinograde i podrume Brotnja” as part of the “Dani berbe grožđa”; the documented edition was the fourth of its kind. The cycling tour through the vineyards and wine cellars of Brotnjo began on the grounds of Vinarija Čitluk and was undemanding enough for young participants to take part as well.

The “Memorijal Bože Gagro” is considered the athletics competition with the longest event tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was also announced as the 20th edition of the international athletics competition. The Gradski stadion Bare can be used for walking and other activities outside a designated period.

Čitluk is located on the road between Mostar and Ljubuški.
