Dobrinje: Stećci, Old Mosque and Bronze Age Clay Figurines

During a field survey in 2016, four stećci were recorded at the Dobrinjac site: two saddle-roof-shaped stones with bases, a chest-shaped stone and a slab. The Dobrinjac necropolis with the stećci lies along the local Dobrinje–Buzići road. One of the stećci is particularly richly decorated. Its end faces feature rosettes, along with motifs of double spirals, a twisted band on the roof surfaces and edges, and two half-apples, one of which is partially damaged.

Four animal clay figurines were also recovered at the Dobrinje archaeological site from a red, compacted cultural layer. The finds from the Dobrinje archaeological site are dated approximately to the period from the end of the 11th to the end of the 9th century BC. The four animal clay figurines are considered the only known examples to date of zoomorphic sculpture from the Late Bronze Age in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The old mosque in Dobrinje is also part of the settlement’s historical character. It forms part of the Islamic religious heritage of the Ottoman period in the Visoko area and was built in the typical Bosnian style. Northeast of Dobrinje, on a small rise on the right side of the Bosna valley downstream from Visoko, lies the medieval fortified Grad site. Archaeological investigations there identified the foundations of walls, buildings and a tower.

The Dobrinjski Potok flows through the centre of Dobrinje. Its main source is Pijeska in Lukama, above the settlement and below Komini. Most of the Dobrinje settlement lies around the mouth of the Dobrinjski Potok. Thus, the watercourse and the settlement area have a clearly identifiable spatial relationship, without the stream appearing merely as a peripheral feature of the place.

Waterways from the wider surrounding area also flow towards the Bosna. The stream from Crniš dries up in summer and flows through Dumače into the Bosna. Several smaller streams come from the surrounding slopes and also dry up in summer. From the mouth of the Dobrinjski Potok to the village of Graba below Crniš, the Bosna forms a meander. Most of Dobrinje’s agricultural land lies on the plain.
