Kulen Vakuf on the Una: History, Water and Hotels

The 1.5 km-long “Kulen Vakuf” fishing area stretches along the Una through the settlement. It extends from the waterfall 150 m upstream from the large bridge in Kulen Vakuf to the bridge that crosses the Una to the places of Klisa and Ostrovica. Fishing area 1B “Kulen Vakuf” in Una National Park is reserved exclusively for fly fishing.

Specific sections have also been designated for other activities on the river. The official programme of Una National Park includes a short rafting route on the Una from the Kulen Vakuf fire station to Buk Kulen Vakuf. A rafting stage on the Una also begins upstream from Kulen Vakuf. The published price list of Una National Park lists a section for rafting, kayaking or canoeing on the Martin Brod–Kulen Vakuf route. Kulen Vakuf is considered one of the two established visitor zones of Una National Park.

The historic town of Kulen Vakuf was built on an island. Its foundation is connected with the construction of the Sultan Ahmed I Mosque, which took place between 1603 and 1617.

Above the village of Ostrovica near Kulen Vakuf lies Ostrovica Castle, a large medieval structure. Opposite Ostrovica, on the other side of the Una Valley in which Kulen Vakuf lies, are the ruins of Havala Fortress. Historically, the fortress overlooked the bridge over the Una and Kulen Vakuf.

West of Havala lies a Muslim cemetery. The grave inscriptions are still clearly visible today and are written in Arabic script and the Turkish language. A branch of the Una may have been dug out by hand on the southern side of the town.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is also part of the official excursion programme of Una National Park, which includes a visit to the place of worship. A guided tour in Kulen Vakuf also introduces visitors to the distinctive features of Krajina carpets.

A marked and safe hiking trail leads from the centre of Kulen Vakuf to the tower of Ostrovica. For the route towards Martin Brod, a provider in Kulen Vakuf offers bicycles for the 6 km-long paved road.
