Hotels in Brdo between the Balkana Lakes and Mountain Trails

Lake Balkana consists of a small lake and a large lake. The Balkana lakes are fed by the mountain streams Cjepalo and Skakavac, as well as by springs below the Great Lake. In summer, the Balkana lakes are suitable for swimming.

In the wider regional surroundings of Brdo, the “Green Tour” association has recorded more than 300 km of cycling routes on paved and unpaved roads. A dedicated route through the surrounding area is the 88 km Mrkonjić Region–Balkana–Stričići–Krupa cycling route, with 1,300 metres of elevation gain. The slopes of Mount Lisina in the surroundings of Brdo are also suitable for walks and hikes. This means that different types of routes are available side by side: recorded routes on paved and unpaved roads, a clearly named long-distance cycling route with elevation gain, and trails on the slopes of Lisina.

A main road runs through the settlement of Brdo and is used by thousands of people on foot in summer on their way towards Balkana.

A scythe-mowing festival takes place annually in Balkana, in the surroundings of Brdo. It celebrates the art of scythe mowing and the best scythe mowers. In the wider regional surroundings of Brdo, blacksmith workshops in Mrkonjić Grad continue to produce traditional handmade tools, including the “Varcarka” scythe.

A monument stands at the memorial site in the surroundings of Brdo. A memorial service was held there for ten fallen soldiers of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) and four civilians, and flowers were laid.
