Zidine – Stećak Necropolises and Roman Traces

A Stećak necropolis is located at the Zidine archaeological site. Further specific evidence is located in Kopači: the remains of three villas have been recorded on a diluvial field; one of them is situated in the Surduk field in the Zidine hamlet. Remains of a presumed Roman villa rustica were identified in the Surduk–Zidine field.

Geography

In the narrower sense, Novo Goražde comprises the settlements of Sopotnica, Zidine, Slatina, Kopači, Mašići and Gradac. Thus, Zidine and Kopači form part of this settlement network, while further historical and geographical links extend into the regional surroundings of Goražde and the Bosnian-Podrinje Canton of Goražde.

History

Zidine near Kopači is documented as a settlement from the Roman period. Within the municipality of Novo Goražde, Samobor is a state-protected national monument. Samobor was first mentioned in written sources in 1397. The Church of Saint George in Donja Sopotnica was built in 1446.

Another historical site is the Goražde printing house. It was the first printing house in the territory of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina, remained in operation until 1523 and printed three books.

A memorial to 126 Bosniaks killed in 1941 was erected in Zidine near Kopači, in the municipality of Novo Goražde. The memorial stands in the local Zidine cemetery in Kopači, bears the names of 36 victims and is modeled on a Stećak. It was erected on 10 June 2017.

Landscape

Samobor is located on a cliff of Mount Gostun near Ustiprača and overlooks the Janjina gorge. The remains of Samobor can only be accessed from the south, from the direction of Čajniče.

The archaeological finds at Surduk–Zidine are also connected with the local landscape. The burial mound at Surduk–Zidine was removed during road construction; around 24 graves were discovered in the process. A large burial mound with a diameter of approximately 40 m is said to have stood at the Surduk–Zidine site. On the other side of the road, closer to the Drina, the remains of a second, likewise disturbed burial mound were visible.

Regional Activities

In the immediate regional surroundings of Goražde, the International Friendship Festival takes place every year during the first week of August, featuring music, workshops and sporting activities. In the wider regional area, rafting, inflatable boat trips and kayaking are offered on the Drina. Swimming, fishing, camping and day trips are also available on the Drina in the wider regional area.

In the immediate regional surroundings of the Bosnian-Podrinje Canton of Goražde, there are 92 km of developed cycling routes leading through natural landscapes and past significant cultural and historical sites.
