Obzor on the Black Sea: Beach, Culture and the Kaleto Ecopath

Obzor is situated along the scenic road connecting Bulgaria’s southern and northern Black Sea coasts.

Coast

Obzor Beach is approximately ten kilometres long and between 20 and 60 metres wide. Beach activities include beach volleyball, swimming, surfing, diving, jet skiing and water skiing. At the southern end, a quieter, more spacious stretch of beach extends away from the lively centre. Thus, different beach environments and types of activity meet in the same coastal town: open-water activities contrast with a more secluded stretch.

Nature

The Kaleto Ecopath is approximately 2.2 kilometres long and begins near the north-western edge of Obzor. It leads through the Gabara area, offers views towards Obzor and the sea, and then enters a shady forest. The route includes wooden bridges and streams, as well as rest areas at Ayazmoto, Mechata Cheshma and Parvomayska Meadow.

Culture

At the town museum, the history and archaeology department contains more than 800 exhibits dating from the 5th–4th century BC to the 18th century AD. The ethnographic department contains 300 exhibits from the 18th to the 20th century. The town museum’s collection also presents the history, everyday life and culture of the inhabitants of the ancient settlement. The museum holdings therefore span the period from early historical eras to more recent everyday and cultural history.

A small park in Obzor displays remains of columns, capitals and statues from the Roman Temple of Jupiter. In the Kaleto area, the foundations and corner towers of the Kozyak Fortress are visible. The museum, park and fortress area make historical traces accessible in different forms: indoor exhibits, preserved architectural elements in the park and visible fortress remains within the town area.

The Chapel of St Ivan Rilski stands on a hill above Obzor and offers views over the town and the sea. It is an active religious site. Its location combines views over the town with a building that continues to be used for religious purposes.
