Culture and history
The Kaleto Fortress is located next to the present-day town of Devin and is associated with events from the Ottoman period. It was built in the early Byzantine era and existed throughout the Middle Ages; parts of its walls are still visible.
In the Devin area, the Kemeroviyat Bridge is a legally protected cultural monument. Its stone arch is 3 m wide, 30 m long and 6 m high.
The museum exhibition in Devin presents ethnographic materials in four thematically arranged halls covering archaeology, the Second Bulgarian Empire, ethnography and modern history.
Nature
The protected site “Porechieto na reka Devinska” in the Devin area was established by Order RD-618 of 8 July 2002. It includes a 3 km-long zone for angling tourism, where Balkan trout are fished.
In the Devin area, the canyon of the Devinska River is more than 900 m deep.
In the Devin area, the Struilitsa–Kaleto–Lakata eco-trail provides access to the protected site via metal bridges, stairs and rest areas. In the locality of Struilitsa in the Devin area, there are outdoor facilities with a therapy pool, a steam bath, a sauna and a Jacuzzi.
Near Devin, Devil’s Throat Cave lies 17 km south of the town. It contains a 42 m-high underground waterfall, known as the highest underground waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. Yagodina Cave is located near Devin, has 8,501 m of galleries and is considered the longest cave in the Rhodopes.
The traditional cuisine of the Devin region includes Rhodope klin, patatnik, Smilyan beans and Balkan trout.
