Smolyan: Hotels and Accommodations

Smolyan is located in the central Rhodopes and includes the highest part of the Perelik Division, including Golyam Perelik at 2,191 meters. Regular bus services connect Smolyan with Sofia, Plovdiv, and Kardzhali.

Nature

The municipality of Smolyan offers more than 20 signposted hiking eco-routes and trails. The signposted and certified Nevyastata Eco Trail begins at the Chapel of St. Panteleimon and is 750 meters long.

The Canyon of Waterfalls Eco Trail is located in the area of the Soskovcheto protected area and its buffer zone. The Canyon of Waterfalls includes 46 waterfalls; the largest has a drop of almost 70 meters. The Soskovcheto and Amzovo protected areas are located about fifteen minutes from Smolyan. The species “Bog Clubmoss” is protected in Amzovo. Soskovcheto is associated with wild goats and brown bears.

Smilyan is the starting point for more than twelve signposted mountain hiking trails with rest areas. The municipality of Smolyan also includes sections of the Iron Curtain Route, the Trans-Rhodope Cycling Route, and the Sultan's Trail, as well as signposted local cycling routes and forest paths.

Culture

Turluka was a Thracian sanctuary that was used for more than a millennium. The foundations of a monastery complex and a three-nave Christian basilica were discovered there.

The Smolyan Planetarium offers shows in the star hall for children, as well as educational, popular science, and thematic programs. Programs in foreign languages are available in Russian, French, German, English, Greek, and Turkish.

Smilyan is also associated with special yellow cheeses and traditional dairy products, including Miahovo cheese, milk pie, and full-fat curd.
