Roc: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture and History

In the Middle Ages, Roč developed into a fortified castle with defensive walls, towers, and the Large and Small Gates. From the 15th to the 16th century, Roč was also a centre of Croatian literary culture, as well as publishing and printing based on the Glagolitic script. The Aleja glagoljaša begins near Roč and follows the road towards Hum. The memorial complex comprises eleven Glagolitic monuments, including the Chakavian Parliament Pillar, a Glagolitic lapidarium, and the Hum Gate.

The parish church of St Bartholomew is a protected cultural asset within Roč’s historic ensemble. The walls of the nave and the ceiling are decorated with elaborate stucco work dating from 1785. Previously unknown medieval wall paintings were uncovered beneath later layers of paint.

The Romanesque Church of St Roch contains two layers of frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The later layer of frescoes depicts Christ in Glory and the twelve Apostles. The Church of St Anthony the Abbot is a Romanesque church from the 12th century.

Events and Insights

The Buon Fresco Workshop in Roč combines an introduction to the medieval frescoes of the Church of St Roch with the creation of a personal fresco in an art studio. Participants take their completed fresco home as a traditional souvenir.

The Little Glagolitic Academy of Roč takes place annually and is attended by sixth-grade students from all over Croatia. Roč is also home to a replica of Gutenberg’s Glagolitic printing press, which can be viewed by prior arrangement.

Z armoniku v Roč is an international annual gathering of diatonic accordion players held in Roč. The programme includes music workshops, lectures, and presentations about Istrian folk instruments.
