Culture and History
The Church of St George the Old in Plomin is an 11th-century Romanesque church and later served as the brotherhood church of Plomin’s fishermen and sailors. Its Romanesque bell tower is one of three preserved Romanesque bell towers in Istria.
Plomin’s parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as St George the Younger, was built in 1474. It contains three Baroque altars, woodcarvings, liturgical silver and gilded objects, as well as a fresco known as the Nursing Madonna; a town loggia was added nearby in 1650. The Plomin Inscription is a stone relief of the Illyrian-Roman god Silvanus with a later Glagolitic inscription and is considered one of the oldest monuments of the Croatian language. The historic town of Plomin is enclosed by medieval walls from the 13th and 14th centuries as well as Renaissance defensive walls from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Nature
The endemic Istrian bellflower, Campanula Istriaca Feer, blooms around the houses, church, walls and baladures of Plomin in late May and early June. The programme of the Istrian Bellflower Days in Plomin includes panel discussions, exhibitions, singing and music.
Plomin lies on the slope of Plominska gora, whose limestone side drops almost vertically to the sea.
Hiking and Trails
The Babino sklonište–Plomin stage is listed as 22.8 km, taking 8–9 hours, and rated easy. The PP 722 begins at the D66 state road near Hotel Flanona at Vidikovac Plomin, climbs to Lanišče and ends in Sitodraž. As part of the Zvončić zove u Plomin event, a guided hike on Plominska gora was included in the programme; it began in Plomin’s old town.
Water
The Rt Mašnjak snorkelling site below Plomin can only be reached by sea and is accessed by boat or SUP. From Plomin Luka, a coastal promenade follows the shore towards the beaches; the snorkelling site is several hundred metres farther on.
Local Life
Bela nedeja is a traditional religious and folk festival in Plomin, held on the first Sunday in October with a mass as well as entertainment and sporting events. The recurring market for local products at Bela nedeja includes cured meat, honey, chestnuts, cheese, handicrafts and local wines.
